Dynamics Gp Canadian Payroll 2011 Tax Update Notes

, we would like to share our experience and possible data fixing scenarios, related to just released Canadian Payroll Tax Update for 2011. Before we go to details, we would like to recommend Great Plains customers on version 9.0 with Canadian Payroll to upgrade to version 2010 or at least 10.0, as technical support directly from Microsoft Business Solutions for 9.0 is about to expire and you might lose the ability to apply Payroll Tax Updates down the road in 2011. In our case study we were applying Tax Update, coupled with the latest service pack for GP 9.0 (wave one for 2011). For the customers in USA, we have the service to update Tax tables for the customers on the obsolete and no longer supported versions, however in 2011 the Match rule for FICA/Medicare is not technically correct (as employee contribution is now decreased, while the employer contribution stays the same, historically they were equal since the very ancient times, this is why Great Plains was storing percentage in one record). Now, back to Canadian Payroll Tax update story:

1.It is important to run all the payruns for the year 2010, prior to applying the patch. Please, read instructions, dont just click the install button

2.Update is now coupled with the Service Pack, and as you may already know, Service Pack application is similar to version update (but usually runs faster, as the scope is lesser number of tables, changed in new SP, modifications to Dynamics.dic, etc.). It is in general the good idea to have Service pack update to be kind of forced (coupled with such step as quarterly tax rates and formulas update), but mini upgrade is a surgery (smaller in scope, but still the one). So, please, plan accordingly. If something goes wrong with this upgrade procedure, be ready to roll back from backups

3.And now the issues we got in the update itself. We had several companies to apply tax update, and all of them failed, with report, that P_CPY_MSTR (CPY10100 table) and its historical version P_CLY_MSTR_LY (CPY50100). It took us up to eight hours to search Dynamics GP knowledge base, no help there. Then we tried to remove the orphan employee records in Payroll Masters. And finally we came to the conclusion to force master tables upgrade by backing them up on the SQL Select Into level script, then in GP -> Maintenance -> SQL - > drop and create Canadian Payroll Employee master and LY counterpart and finally design the script to move Employees from the copy to the newly created tables. This was not really a rocket science, as only one field was added to both tables: PPQReleve1BoxCSST

4.Going beyond the topic. It is also possible to update Canadian Payroll taxes for the customers, who are on the version below 9.0: 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0, 5.5 and even earlier. To our opinion, the Canadian payroll related legislation is too complex to make it possible to keep such old versions still in production (in USA we have customers, who are running Payroll in such archaic Corporate ERP application as Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows or Macintosh, but not in Canada, where we have such provinces as Quebec with different legislation roots). However, if you are still running Canadian Payroll module in production, we are here to help you we can update tax rates from the version 2010 (where we apply them to our test company and then roll out to your companies)
