Dudley is a town of considerable size located in Englands West Midlands area and lays claim to a rich historical legacy
. The history of Dudley stretches back to the medieval era, with the imposing Dudley Castle having stood on a hillock looking over the town for centuries; the building is even mentioned in the Domesday Book. The castle which can be seen today dates to the 13th century, and presented the focus around which the town developed. Also to be seen are the remnants of the St. James Priory originating from the 12th century, which may be seen in Priory Park.The town saw rapid industrial development during the 18th and 19th centuries, with the principal industries being limestone and coal mining alongside steel, iron, engineering, metallurgy, leatherworking and textiles. In recent times, however, these activities have diminished in importance. In earlier times Dudley acquired a reputation for somewhat unsanitary living conditions, but today it is a modern town with contemporary conveniences.
The Dudley town centre is a mixture of modern and quaint historic buildings, with several dating from the 18th century. Notable buildings include the Churchill Shopping Precinct, refurbished in recent times and the Trident Centre. In addition to these the massive Merry Hill Centre located six miles away offers superb modern shopping.
Dudleys nightlife consists mainly of the many pubs found around the city, but you will also find a nightclub, a casino, a bowling alley with an arcade and a number of restaurants. At the Castle Gate Park you will find such mainstays as Nandos, Frankies and Bennys, Pizza Hut and Chiquitos. Typical English cuisine can be sampled in the pubs scattered around the town.
