The writer Virgina Woolf has brought out the weakness of men for women in the story.A
rich men will invariably like heaps of gold and currency .This story throws light on the great upheaval in English social caused by industrial revolution.The industrialization has given rise to rapidly progressing middle class of Merchants Manufactures and skilled workers who worked hard day and night to enhance their social status .Industrial revolution and material advancement had brought about a clear change in the social set up .The Aristocratic class found it difficult to survive due to the limited income from lands.Their income was insufficient to full filled their needs and for this purpose they did not hesitate to use immoral methods to get money.
The Duchess in the story is the true Representative of this Aristocratic class of society .The Duchess is the important character of this story ,Who exploited the weakness of jeweller by inviting him for long weekend with her three daughters Amanda ,Daphe ,Diana out of who me the jeweller loved Diana the most.
This story describe the economic and moral decadence of Airsocracy as well as the rise of a wealthy middle class society.these people had no property .They earned money through their knowledge and skills.This skilled class was destroying the Aristocratic class by buying their property and assets.The jeweller Oliver Bacon is a true representative of this class.Oliver Bacon is the main character of the story .He became selfish and curning due to his love for money.
This story describe the life of the most famous jeweller who was cheater and cleaver .He was the poor man in the past,by made his fortune by cheating other person and became the most important personality of England.He reached to the point where all Lords were proud to meet him.His social status became so high that the Ministers invited him in their parties .This is the story of Oliver Bacon Client who for maintaing her respect was compelled to sell her jewellery.It seemed that her resources had exhausted but her needs remained UN filled.For satisfying her needs she was compelled to sell the fake pearls .Oliver was aware of actual situation of her life and he thought Duchess may play a trick and sell the fake pearls,But the Duchess also knew his weakness that he was a lovelorn person .She invited him for long weak end with her daughters .Her invitation compelled jeweller to think about to spend the weak end with Diana in the woods alone.
She manipulated to deliver ten false pearls to Oliver and extricated 20,000 pounds.The jeweller posed himself as the cleave st of all men.
The writer has attempted to tell us the Psychology of a love lorn person like Oliver .He is cleaver sharp and very intelligent .No one can deceive him .He was still a bachelor of mature years .He loved the daughters of Duchess and knew that she gave him the right bait at the right time.In the hope of being near his beloved ,he forget the golden principle of his trade.In this circumstance no men in with a heart in his breath could have withstood the temptation .There are losses which we must bear because Man is Man and some times his passions dominate his reasons and principles.
The crux of the story is that poorest of the persons becomes Richest jeweller by cheating the people during the age of Industrial revolution.The Duchess of the richest family became poor due to indolence and resort to cheating for living with honour.
