USB cables are the most common lead in use for most home electronics and computing gadgets and equipment.

Several USB ports are found on computers and laptops to hook up other devices, be it a mouse or printer or the latest smartphone or digital photo frame.

Handheld gadgets such as phones and digital cameras often feature mini or micro USB ports. These are smaller versions of the main USB technology, so it is vital to check your new device to find out which type of USB cable you will need.

USB cables are really easy to use as they feature "plug and play" software. Just plug the lead in and the drivers are automatically installed and the device set up for use. Files and folders can then be "dragged and dropped" between the two pieces of equipment or data sent for transfer, display or printing.

HDMI cables

HDMI cables are the ideal option for setting up a home cinema system or connecting games consoles to High Definition TVs or display screens.

They transmit digital video and audio signals along one wire and can support resolutions up to 1920x1200 pixels. They are ideal for hooking up computers, DVD or Blu-ray players and games consoles with screens which are up to 49 feet apart, without loss of quality.

HDMI cables are also easy to set up and use via the menu options on the device and some handheld gadgets such as HD camcorders now feature micro HDMI ports.

Ethernet cables

Ethernet cables are used to connect computers and create a network and hook them up to equipment such as printers and external displays. They are also ideal for connecting games consoles to the internet to allow online play.

They transfer data at very high speeds so are great for high-demand uses and come in different categories, although even the lowest, cat 3, will be good enough for home use.

Solid core Ethernet cables are the better option, especially when longer lengths are required, as they are less flexible so do not get bent. The leads can be up to 100ft long, allowing connection of devices in different parts of the house.
