Dog Has Diarrhea - What Do You Do?

Noticing your dog has diarrhea can be a scary situation. In most cases, the human companion will become a bit nervous, with good reason. If you notice your dog has runny bowel movements you should start looking for possible causes within your home and even in your yard. It is important that you try to figure out the cause for his runny bowel movements so you can figure out the best course of treatment for your dog.

How can you figure out why your dog has diarrhea? There are a few things that you can do that can help you determine the culprit for your dogs' diarrhea. One of the first things you should do is begin looking for signs that your dog has gotten into something unhealthy for him.

This could be a rip in your trash bag, a plant that has been tipped over, a chewed plant and things of this nature. If you are unable to find anything within your house that your dog could have gotten into you should begin looking in other places that your dog is unsupervised or off of the leash, such as your back yard. Another animal could have brought something into your yard and your dog could possibly have eaten or chewed on it.Dog Has Diarrhea - What Do You Do?

If you still are unable to find anything that appears to be the culprit you might want to extend your search to your garage and take a look at some of your chemicals. Look on the ground for possible staining from oil, gas, anti freeze and even windshield washer fluid. All of these can cause your dog to have an upset stomach and result in diarrhea. In the event you believe your dog got into a chemical, immediately contact your vet and inform them of your suspicions. More than likely you will need to bring your dog to the vet to be seen.

If you are unable to determine the cause of the runny stools you should think about any new foods your dog has consumed, both dog food and people foods. Could these be the cause? After you have ruled out a major toxin you should pay very close attention to the way your dog is acting. Here are some things to look for:

1. Is your dog lethargic?

2. Is he drinking enough water?

3. Is he having trouble walking?

4. Is he behaving abnormal?

5. How frequent are his runny stools?

If your dog is lethargic, not drinking water or having trouble standing or walking you need to contact your veterinarian and have your dog seen by a professional. These could be signs that something more serious is wrong with your dog than diarrhea. In the event your dog has diarrhea and none of the previously mentioned issues pertain to him or her you can look into an over the counter medication for dog diarrhea and get your vet's approval.

There are herbal medications that can be given to the dog, prescription dog food and medications to treat the dog. Keep in mind, if the stools continue to be runny after you have had the dog on a treatment plan you should bring him into your vet to find out if there is another cause for his runny bowel movements.
