Doe Testing in Ireland and how is it carried out
The Doe test is a vehicle test that is specific to vehicles in Ireland. Every year all commercial vans and trucks need to undergo this test. Without getting a pass certificate you cannot tax your car or van in Ireland.
Many operators of trucks and vans dread the test and find it to be an inconvenience. The reality is that the test can become part of your service schedule so you do not really notice it. Take for example you truck or vans service schedule. Many operators in Ireland do very high mileage and require a couple of services per year. The doe test takes only about an hour to complete. Now if the Doe test is scheduled after a major service the vehicle should have no problem in passing the test.
It this type of logic that can remove the stress of preparing a truck or van for the test because it has already gotten the attention that it needs to pass the doe test. The test tends to concentrate on a number of areas. Foremost are the levels of emissions that the vehicle is putting out. The guidelines of the test set out a maximum emission threshold for the vehicle, if these are exceeded it means that a part of the engine/ exhaust is not functioning correctly. Another are that gets checked during the test is the suspension system of the vehicle. This is typically carried out by slip plates and sensors. If a vehicle does not manage to pass the test it is not the end of the world. You can book a vehicle in for a retest provided it is within 21 days of 4,000km of failing the test. If testing equipment needs to be used to retest your truck or van then the doe retest fee is half the price of a full test. If the retest is simply a visual inspection then there is no retest fee. If you fail to have the doe retest carried out within 21 day then you must do a complete doe test again and pay the full fee. It is important to not allow the 21 days to pass. It is not up to the local doe test centre to decide to ignore the time threshold, they have no choice as the process is fully computerised and linked to the monitoring body.
