The National Forest the UK's latest rural holiday destination

The National Forest is one of the most ambitious and imaginative environmental projects in the UK. In the very Heart of England, stretching across parts of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire more than 200 square miles of countryside are being transformed, blending ancient woodland with new planting to create a new national forest. As an increasingly popular destination for those seeking to stay in holiday cottages the National Forest offers the chance to enjoy a new and developing landscape.

The aim of the National Forest is to turn one of the least wooded parts of the country into a Forest for the Nation' and create a green link between the two ancient forests of Needwood in the west and Charnwood in the east. Before the project began woodland covered only 12 square miles of the area. Within its boundary are miles of rolling farmland and a former coalfield which was in urgent need of regeneration. Forest towns and villages include Burton upon Trent (famous for its brewing), Coalville and Swadlincote (formerly associated with the coal mining industry) and the historic town of Ashby de la Zouch.

In just over ten years, more than seven million trees have been planted and the woodland cover almost trebled. New woodlands, most of which are broadleaf species, will complement ancient woodland, meadows, lakes, rivers and other visitor attractions to create this new forest for the nation. The National Forest – the UK's latest rural holiday destination

For visitors to the National Forest holiday cottages make an ideal base from which to explore the gently undulating landscape which is perfect for walking, cycling or horse-riding. Through the creation of new habitats the National Forest is also an ideal location for bird and wildlife watching. In this ever-changing landscape, as the woodland cover spreads and the Forest grows, one thing is guaranteed there is always something new to see and do. As well as visiting this Forest in the making', you can contribute to its development by planting or adopting a tree.

A regular annual event in the National Forest is the Walking Festival in late May which offers guided and self-guided walks for all ages, interests or abilities. All guided walks are led by expert guides keen to pass on their knowledge about this special area's rich and varied history, flora and fauna, geology, myths and legends. From a gentle stroll, walks for the whole family, walks suitable for wheelchair users, to longer more strenuous rambles for keen walkers, the programme has something for everyone.
