Diet For Cancer Patient

Body of a cancer patient is under constant pressure fighting from disease and the treatment

. It needs proper nourishment to make body strong enough to fight all the negative effects of the heavy treatment and to fight the disease. Cancer weakens ones immune system. A healthy diet enables the cancer patient to strengthen the bodys defenses and fight back infections. A healthy diet will also hasten healing of the body tissues that may be damaged during the course of the disease and its treatment.

Few tips for diet of a cancer patient are:

Nuts and seeds: nuts and seeds contain beneficial fatty acids, vitamin e and fiber. Flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and walnuts are rich in anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids. Nuts contain antioxidants, Quercetin and campferol, which may help to suppress the growth of cancer cells. Nuts like cashew are also beneficial in cancer patients diet. Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which is particularly useful at fighting prostate cancer.

Legumes are an excellent source of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and valuable phytonutrients. When combined with grains, they form a complete protein Vegetables contain fibers and important phytonutrients which help your body fight cancer. Include generous amounts of raw and cooked vegetables in your diet. Vegetables in the brassica family (i.e., cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, turnip, rutabaga, kale) help keep thyroid activity in check which is often beneficial for cancer patients.

Garlic: garlic helps to improve the bodys ability to resist tumors, and it appears to interfere with certain chemicals that cause cancer as well. Garlic is full of antioxidants. Antioxidants counter the effects of free radicals, oxygen molecules with unpaired electrons that can cause damage throughout the body if they are not stabilized.

Brown rice is a good source of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. It is a valuable gluten free grain which contains important phytonutrients such as lignans which are converted into cancer protective substances by the friendly flora in our intestines. Brown rice also has the beneficial effect of decreasing insulinic reactivity. Eating brown rice helps avoid constipation, unlike white rice which may cause constipation.

Fruits contain important phytonutrients which help your body detoxify and fight cancer. Even though fruits are sweet, they contain fibers which modulate sugar uptake and therefore do not pose the same concern as eating refined sugar. Use fresh or frozen fruits; avoid canned fruits. Small amounts of dried berries may also be used.

Avoid heavy fatty meat, gluten containing grains, dairy products, fried foods, alcohol, refined sugars, Food additives such as artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, hydrogenated (Trans) fats, and preservatives, pickles. These can irritate immune system increasing problems.

Cancer treatment can cause nausea so the patient should eat and drink at regular intervals. Eat several small meals instead of eating heavily 2-3 times a day.

Take sufficient quantity of liquids in form of fresh fruit juices, coconut water, lemonade, vegetable stock, light soups etc.

Consult a dietician or nutritionist before adapting to any type of diet. Dont take any nutritional supplements other then prescribed.
