Debt Effects On Health

If you're experiencing debt problems, it's hard to think about anything else

. The prospect of having your gas, phone or electricity supply cut off or possibly even having your home repossessed are important issues that you won't be able to switch off from.

When your level of personal debt is taking over your thoughts on a daily basis, it could affect your health in a number of different ways;

Stress

If you've missed payments on household energy bills or credit cards, the sound of the phone ringing or mail dropping through your letterbox is enough to put you on edge; is it another final demand or someone asking for payment over the phone?

Your home is somewhere you should feel relaxed and comfortable, but for many people in debt, this is simply not the case and it can feel like a constant bombardment of letters and calls is ruining your life and making you feel stressed all the time.

Anxiety

The levels of stress and apprehension you feel about your creditors contacting you regarding your debts can easily transfer into other parts of your life.

Being anxious puts your body in a permanent 'fight or flight' state and you could soon find that everyday things such as going to the shops or waiting for a bus could start to make you feel anxious when they didn't before.

Depression

There's a big difference from people saying their debts are depressing and actually having clinical depression, but if you notice changes in your behaviour and moods on a regular basis, then you should speak to your doctor immediately.

Constantly worrying about debt and feeling like there's no way out can bring about significant changes in your personality, for example you may not want to socialise with friends and start to look at other areas of your life in a much more negative light too.

Sleeping problems

If your debt problems are on your mind during every waking moment then it's likely that they will disrupt your sleep too.

The thoughts of losing your home, not being able to provide for your family and trying to avoid contact with your creditors are major issues in anyone's life and if you don't do anything positive about them, getting to sleep and having an unbroken sleep may prove impossible.

The lack of sleep will not only affect you and how you function at home or at work, but will also have an impact on those around you.

Summary

Many people aren't aware that it's their debt problems causing these symptoms until they take action and notice that they start to feel better knowing they have a debt solution in place.

Don't let debt damage your health; if you're worried about your finances, speak to a professional debt adviser and take back control of your life.
