1. Patience: This is a given. When you are dealing with a difficult teenager, a lot of times you probably feel like you are going to blow your top. Seriously, though they can really get under your skin and sometimes it can even get scary to be around them. Their tempers flare, yours does too, and a lot of times you might be asking yourself, "how did we get here?" The only way to handle the hard times with your teens is to have patience and to realize they are going through something pretty major in their lives. You've been there before, so you know. 2. A Lot of Love: When you are struggling to get through to your teen, there has to be a lot of love that flows through you. Understanding for what they are going through and setting aside judgement will help you to get through to them, and sometimes that love is all it takes to make it passed the rough spots. Remember what it was like when you first held your baby in your arms and try to remember that the person standing in front of you is still your baby, even if you hardly recognize them.
3. Help: You may need some additional support to deal with your teenager; it can be really hard to go through things alone and having others who are going through the same thing, or have gone through it can help you tremendously. Topics that you may not be prepared for can arise, like what to do if your teenager is in trouble with drugs, or what to do if they are running with the wrong crowd. A support group or counselor can really assit you and your teenager get passed the troubles.
