Cowboys vs. Giants: "Wade Phillips Fired" is dominating the NFL headlines early this week but it's actually just the shortened version of the hottest topic in Texas every other week for the past month:

"(When is) Wade Phillips (going to be) Fired?"

Okay, give credit to the Texas Rangers' for their first-ever trip to the World Series which also earned a good chunk of coverage but now Jason Garrett will be given his shot and the first task is whipping his team into shape for a trip to the New Meadowlands Sunday for a second shot at the New York Giants.

Online sportsbook didn't hesitate posting odds on the NFC East divisional matchup and the opening line is New York Giants -14. The betting total is 45.

DON'T TAKE OFFENSE

Garrett managed an impressive offensive unit, quarterbacked by Tony Romo, that finished in the top 10 of nearly every major statistical category last year...but this year has been a completely different story. They have looked nothing like the 2009 division champs.

One of the categories they struggled with last season was QB sack percentage and ironically, it was a punishing sack against this same Giants defense in Week 7 that led to the end of Romo's season.

So no offense and no Romo makes it look like an uphill climb for Dallas even though they were actually leading New York by a score of 20-7 five minutes into the second quarter of the first meeting.

ON AN INTERIM BASIS

Only three coaches that were fired mid-season since 1978 have been in the midst of a winning season but for nearly all of the 41 interim coaches promoted during that span it's been a struggle finding straight-up wins down the stretch.

When looking at results from their first game at the wheel, it's no wonder the oddsmaker has posted such a huge spread.

The New York Giants have now won five games in a row straight-up and are starting to look better each week. It's bolstered their future odds standing, but the return of Michael Vick positions the Philadelphia Eagles in a close second.

Suppose the Cowboys had to be listed since they have not yet been mathematically eliminated but the magic number is down to four and after New York treats Dallas to a piece of East Coast hospitality, that figure will drop to two.
