The Osteoporotic Drug Fosomax has a Number of Side Effects:
Fosamax (Fosomax is a common misspelling) is a prescription drug used to treat patients who have osteoporosis or are at high risk of developing osteoporosis either due to cancer or a genetic predisposition. This drug is often used on postmenopausal women to increase bone mass. It has been reported that over half of men and women over the age of 75 are affected by osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes your bones to weaken, become brittle and fracture. As osteoporosis sets in, the balance between bone rebuilding and bone breakdown becomes unbalanced such that you break down more bone than you rebuild. Fosamax (bisphosphonate) is a drug that inhibits the breaking down of bone and allows for bone rebuilding to catch up thereby increasing bone density. This helps to prevent bone fractures that often occur as you age, particularly where the spine and hip are concerned.
Shortly after Fosamax came on the market there were reports of unusual and severe side effects. In rare cases, Fosamax had been reported to cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, which means jawbone death. This condition may be triggered in the jaw by oral surgery or tooth extraction. If you are taking Fosamax and are experiencing numbness or swelling of the jaw, jaw pain, gum infections or loose teeth you should stop taking Fosamax and contact your healthcare provider immediately. Fosamax has also been reported to be associated with spontaneous femur fractures. An ABC report in March 2010 found information that linked Fosamax to an increase in unusual femur bone fractures with long-term use. Long-term use means using Fosamax for 5 years or more. This news report indicated that doctors were concerned that this osteoporotic drug may cause bones to become more brittle the longer therapy is used because patients have lost their ability to remodel bone the way they should, placing some women at greater risk. What is so unusual is that these femur fractures occurred when patients were walking or doing low-energy exercise. Given that the femur is the strongest bone in the body, this is an unexpected result. A number of women reported that they experienced severe leg pain days or months prior to these types of fractures.
FDA Continues to Investigate Reports of Unusual Fosamax Side Effects:
The FDA is still investigating these reports of Fosamax side effects including generic forms of this drug such as Actonel, Reclast and Boniva. More recently, the FDA has requested that the manufacturers of all bisphosphonates include a warning label concerning the possible link between osteonecrosis of the jaw and these drugs. It is not known if terminating Fosamax therapy will lower the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw since this drug has a half-life of 10 years in bone because it is slowly metabolized. In April 2006, the first Fosomax Lawsuit was filed against Merck, the manufacturer of Fosamax. Plaintiffs claim that this drug causes osteonecrosis of the jaw and that Merck kept the associated risks with this drug hidden from the public.
