Aerospace industries rely on good management systems to increase product quality and cut down on expenses. On January 2009, a revision was publicly released for the venerable AS9100, the standard for quality management of businesses in the aviation, space and defense industries. Compared to the earlier release of ISO 9001:2008 (an amended version of ISO 9001), Revision C has greater impact on the industry. Although companies will have some issues regarding its implementation, the benefits it provides make it well worth the trouble.

The changes in requirements are designed to improve overall product quality as well as production costs much better than the original AS9100 requirements. Among the changes includes expanding the scope in order to include major changes on the design specification for aviation, space and defense. The revision also puts more focus on managing projects and better planning as well as risk management and reduction. Changes made by ISO 9001:2008 have also been integrated.

The revision also features two new terms, namely, critical items and special requirements. Critical items are factors such as software and hardware that have a greater impact on the realization and use of products. On the other hand, special requirements are high-risk requirements that are specifically required by a customer or organization.Competing Better with AS9100 Rev. C

The implementation of AS9100 rev. C presents certain challenges to business firms following AS9100 standards. Among these challenges is the increased emphasis on managing present risks in order to reduce the amount of costs and liabilities mainly associated with "escapes" and to effectively eliminate costs associated with correcting defective design that may cause legal issues. The revision basically requires establishment of risk management from organizations in order to meet the requirements presented by customers or standard regulation.

Upon implementation, an organization can benefit from better evaluation and measurement of product quality. Overall business performance is also improved because of on-time deliveries, organized analysis of information regarding customer satisfaction and trends. Businesses certified by an AS9100 registrar also have increased room for improvement because of the emphasis on improved business planning.

Proper implementation of AS9100 rev. C also improves business image and can put a business firm in a better position against competitors. Customers and organizations favor companies with proper certification, so being able to meet the new requirements can effectively increase a company's growth and profit.
