Were you ever standing in a room and suddenly felt that someone important had walked in the room? How about participating in a training in your company? Were you ever fascinated by the confidence that exulted from the person in front of you while you were afraid to even answer his questions?
These are not rhetorical questions. And I am not talking about you, I am talking about me. I was just like that. It had been years since I had last been promoted and the answer was always that I needed to give presentations and to speak in public for any of the roles I was shooting for.
Whenever you think about speaking in public and in particular the fear of speaking in public there are two problems you will immediately face: what to present and how to present it.
I know from my own experiences how difficult it was for me to choose between the information I wanted to present and the jokes that would make everything go over smoothly. How are you supposed to present dry information and mix it with entertainment? There are techniques comedians use to turn the ordinary in to extraordinary, the mundane into hilarious. And I was about to learn them and how to use it to keep from being a joke while having everyone eat out of the palm of my hand and be entertained.
And you know what? Once I grew confident of my technique, once I saw people laughing and gathering around me at the water cooler I started to loose in inhibitions and my fears.
The best thing about it was that I started enjoying myself. Speaking in public doesn't need to be something terribly serious but it can be fun once you know the secrets.
