Getting your family together for the holidays is not always easy despite the fact that travel is much simpler than it used to be

. If anything fewer families probably get together than fifty years or so ago when families lived closer than they do today.

All this can add up to a not so jolly holiday season for some people, especially those who are unable to spend as much time with their loved ones as might be desired. Many instant messaging programs allow you to get multiple people on the line so no matter how many family members you have that cannot make it in person you will be able to talk to them. Simply set up a time with everyone so that everybody can call in at the same time and you can laugh and joke just like you were all right there with each other.

Another option for being able to be with your family for the holidays or any other time, is through an online video chat. Webcams can be purchased for very little money and some computers, particularly laptops, even have built in webcams. Being able to see and speak to your family on the holidays will make you feel like they are right there spending the holidays with you. And the best part about communicating like this is that it is free as well.

Free Conference Calling

Finally, you and your family could set up a conference call with distant family members. Many individuals think that conference calls are for businesses alone but the truth is that it is a widely used means of communication these days.

A number of families use conference calling as a way to bridge the gaps of distance. It is not just more efficient but fun as well to have multiple family members to be able to converse with each other at the same time on the conference call.

And these days there are even video conference calls available as well. If you choose to communicate through a video conference call program, which can be found on the internet for free, then you will be able to see and hear your loved ones just like they were in the same room.

There are many ways to communicate these days just as there are many ways to travel. The difference is that communication through means such as chat and conference calling are free whereas travel is not. Make the holidays easier on everyone this year and spend them together even if you cannot leave home.
