Chile Travel: The Seven Lakes

Filled with spectacular landscapes made of deep blue shimmering lakes and, Andean peaks and national parks covered with lush forests, Chile's Lake District is one of the most popular destinations in the country. Home to many Mapuche settlements, Chile's most prominent native culture, the region of the Seven Lakes, within the district, provides a unique environment as well as great insights into this fascinating culture.

Located south of Lago Villarrica, this group of lakes is secluded from the rest of the world, surrounded by thick woods and with towering snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. Six of the lakes are in Chile, while one lies in Argentina, and this part of the country was reserved for the Mapuche to establish themselves after the final peace settlement of 1882. Three of the lakes are more easily accessible and possess infrastructure to welcome visitors in their small and hospitable towns located on the shores of the lakes.

Lago Calafquen: one of the most popular tourist destinations among the seven lakes, Lago Calafquen is easily accessible from Villarrica. Surrounded by forest and home to several small islands, this is the warmest lake, reputed as a good spot for swimming. Lican Ray, named after a legendary Mapuche woman, is the main resort on the lake, with two beautiful black-sand beaches.Chile Travel: The Seven Lakes

Lago Panguipulli: the largest of the lakes, covering 116 square kiloeters, Lago Panguipulli boasts a particularly beautiful northern shore lined with sandy beaches and cliffs, while the southern shore is mostly inaccessible by road. Panguipulli, a Mapuche settlement is the largest town in the area, and is known for its streets planted with thousands of roses. The city claims there are over 14,000 roses in town.

Lago Pirehueico: this narrow and deep glacial lake, surrounded by thick virgin forest, is a beautiful place, which has managed to remain untouched until now. There are only two small ports on the lake, Puerto Fuy and Puerto Pirehueico, linked by a ferry service.

Other lakes comprising Chile's famous and virtually untouched Seven Lakes Region are Lakes Pullinque, Pellaifa, Neltume, and Riihue. Some of them are difficult to access but they boast such beautiful nature that these should not be missed! There are plenty of opportunities for river rafting as well as hot springs scattered all throughout the area, making it a perfect spot to combine adventure activities and pure relaxation. A hot spring trail featuring 13 hot springs facilities of various sizes starts only one mile from Lago Pellaifa. Make sure to visit the Geometric Spring and its 16 pools carved in the rock.
