Children with overactive thyroid are risky to stroke
, this is according to a study posted at the American Heart Association (AHA) website last April 2010. The news release, based from Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, reveals that overactive thyroid may now be a new risk factor for ischemic stroke in children, particularly young adults.AHA's Journal was taken from a study conducted in Taiwan among young adults with hyperthyroidism . The study showed that young adults with this condition were 44% more risky to stroke than those who had normal functioning thyroid glands.
The 4-year-long study in Taiwan was spearheaded by Dr. Herng-Ching Lin who is a professor in Taipei Medical University. According to Lin, one third to one fourth of all stroke cases have undetermined causes, of which his study now shows, partly due to overactive thyroid experienced by people aged 18 to 44 years of age. A total of 3,176 young adults with hyperthyroidism was compared against the data of 25,408 patients with normal thyroid functioning, showing the more likelihood of the former to have stroke 44 times more than the latter.
This study adds weight to the consequences of having overactive thyroid whose links to congenital heart disease, heart attacks, increased blood pressure, rapid heart beats, and arterial fibrillation are already established. Children and young adults with overactive thyroid must therefore be properly taken cared of to avoid stroke at such an early age and avoid it all together.
Diet or the food one eats determines to a large extent the propensity of the child or young adult to stroke as food greatly affects thyroid functioning. Treatment of overactive glands should be attended to immediately to avoid any further unwanted complications.
Normally, treatment of overactive glands could be through surgery, radioactive iodine, and anti-thyroid drugs. It would be best to consult the physician on which among these will be more suitable as treatment for a child with hyperactive thyroid glands.
