While visions of cat burglars, dangerous intruders
, or even renegade mailmen might be the home security concerns that have you up at night, the fact of the matter is the vast majority of accidents happen around the home due to the misuse or abuse of everyday objects. This can be especially true of the elderly, and of course children, to whom everyday objects can prove dangerous or even deadly if certain precautions are not taken. Accidents like slips, trips, falls, poisoning, scalding and even drowning are far too common in children under 6 years of age, and the worst part of all is that the vast majority are entirely preventable. One hidden danger around the home that most families never consider: toys. Seriously! In order to stay safe and keep your kids safe from harm, follow some of these important toy safety tips.Designate a play area. Leaving toys lying around can be a prime cause of slips, trips and falls for unsuspecting adults or kids who are still getting the hang of walking. Instead of extending this risk to the entire house, try designating a "play area" for the child, whether the area be his or her room, a special play room, a certain portion of the living room or another area of the home that is convenient for everyone.
Keep play areas tidy. Instill habits with children at a young age that the play area should be left tidy before they move onto the next thing. If the child is working on a project like a puzzle, craft or art project, designate an area where works in progress can be stored for when the child comes back to it. Focus on picking play items up off the floor for maximum safety and home security. Installing or adding a toy box, cabinet or other storage unit that makes clean up a breeze is a good way to encourage frequent picking up of toys without making a hefty cleaning job part of the play ritual.
Make cleaning and safety fun. Many children see cleaning and straightening up the house as a chore because parents use it as a punishment or chore. This negative association can stick with a person for life. Instead, make it a fun time by playing a special "cleanup song" for example, and make the goal to have the room picked up before the song is over. A prize at the end like a piece of candy or a special treat is always a great incentive to clean as well. Cleaning time is also a great opportunity to practice with numbers and colors. Ask your child to pick up five things to practice with numbers, or pick up items by color.
Choose child appropriate toys. Each child is different. Some children will be able to play with certain toys, or play independently outside at much younger ages than others. A child's ability to understand and follow rules will be a big factor in outdoor play, for example, in that the child must understand to stay out of the road, not speak to strangers, and not enter 'off limits' areas like the garden shed or pool. Many parents today use perimeter or area motion detector alarms to warn them when a child has overstepped the boundaries as an extension of an existing home alarm system. Other examples of dangerous toys can be choking, cutting and even poisoning hazards. Unfortunately, some toys are just plain dangerous. Be especially cautious with old or handed down toys. Take time to look up the item online to see if it is dangerous, or has been recalled. New toys should be clearly labeled with safety concerns and warnings, so be sure to read and follow them for good play time security and overall home security.
