Child Development - Sensory Development Of Baby

Sensory Development is as important to your Baby's Development as Brain development

. The sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin etc) feed the brain with sensory experiences that underlines much of the stimulants required by the Brain to build neural pathways.

Do you know that the ears are the most developed sensory organ in a newborn? In fact, the ears were already completely developed in a 5-month old fetus. The knowledge that a 20-week fetus is able to hear the mother's voice has fueled much of theory on prenatal stimulation.

With the ears being such sophisticated sensory organ, it stands to reason that much can be done to develop Baby's brain through auditory stimulation. Humming and rocking Baby has been an age-old, universal wisdom to give our Babies a head-start! While the Mozart Effect, which claimed that just listening to classical music will make your child smarter, had been debunked, research still endorses the fact that moving to music with Baby in arm, promotes much brain activities. All the better yet, move to the music in a 'musical' way - responding to the musical patterns and feelings inherent in the music - will fire up your Baby's brain even more.

Visual perception, or the ability to see, is, of course, functional from birth. Baby's vision does develop, however, during her first few months. Activities involving tracking discrimination, and near / far differences can aid in that development. Show Baby interesting and colourful visuals on the walls and read to her baby books with strong clear visuals. Use your fingers to track the visuals. As Baby moves his eyes to follow the tracking, he is developing ocular motility which is important for preparing him for reading. You can also promote eye tracking with ball play.

Baby's eye follows the sound and makes the discovery. This marks the beginning of hand and eye coordination.

Unlike adults, babies love to put thins in their mouth - but not to eat them. This is because Around the baby's mouth, lips and tongue are sensory nerve receptors. Baby is exploring and discovering the object. Allow Baby to explore with their mouth, lips and tongue by making sure that the objects are clean and safe.

Another activity that can aid the baby sensory development is to give Baby a mobile his crib that he can reach. Through exploration, Baby learns to use whole arm and simple wrist movements and learns to adjust the distance to the object.

Another useful tool that will aid the sensory development of baby is mirror. Babies are fascinated with mirrors! Baby is beginning to develop some form of self-awareness when she reacts to a mirror image of herself. Her initial response may be smiling back or babbling at her reflection. At other times, Baby may wave and pat the mirror. These reactions are helping her learn more about her body.

Baby learns through her senses. One sense we often overlook is the sense of smell. All the senses are operational from birth, needing only variety of exposure to help Baby make sense of the world around her. The sense of smell is strongly linked to memory and plays an important role in Baby's early learning.

Everything in Baby's world is new and needs to be explored and understood using all the senses. As Baby starts to remember how something feels, smells, tastes, looks, or sounds, he begins to understand the physical properties of things around him. This is sensory learning.
