Child Behaviour Tips For Stressed Parents

Child Behaviour Tips For Stressed Parents

If your have children, you have probably noticed that their behaviour often changes like the weather

. Especially if your kids are in their teens. You can proactively take steps toward changing their behaviour simply by introducing alternative behaviours and then encouraging them to use those behaviours until they become habitual.

How to introduce and encourage new, more desirable behaviours!

There are many different ways that this can be done. An extremely popular method of encouraging good behaviour is to introduce and utilize a reward based system. The whole concept of rewarding your child for good behaviour works best for children that are over 2 years of age. It's effectiveness may not be visible immediately and it may take anything up to 2 months for results to be seen. Remain patient and keep a journal of your child's behavior from the beginning and you will be able to compare new behaviours with old, thus giving you a better idea of your child's progress.

Before starting, it is recommended to choose only 1 or 2 behaviors that you would like to see changed (such as bedtime habits - many children act up at bedtime, tooth brushing - it can be extremely difficult to get kids to brush their teeth, picking up toys - also an impossible task for kids at times).

Once a behaviour is chosen, choose a reward - Rewards need to be things that your child will enjoy. Every parent should be able to easily comprise a list of things that their kids enjoy. Examples may include, an extra bedtime story or allowing your kids to stay up an extra hour, or allowing them to eat a favourite snack. (Not a good idea to reward teeth brushing with sweet treats!)

If your children are older, you may see better results if you reward them with points that can be converted to cash once a specified threshold is reached. For example, 1 point for brushing their teeth for 2 minutes or 10 points for putting their toys away before being asked. Once a hundred points have been accumulated, exchange it for a dollar.

Making a behaviour chart together with your kids is a good idea. That way you can talk about behaviours and rewards and possibly raise your kids interest levels. By making them aware of all of the details, they will be more likely to make an effort.

Learning to change yourchild's behaviour is an ongoing chore for parents, but it can be done!
