The Challenging Game of Chess

One of the ancient board games that rely on strategy and can only be played by two is the Chess. Every players goal is to checkmate the king piece of the opponent where it has no room for moving without being attacked or captured. The game includes a checkered chessboard with 64 squares in an 8 by 8 grid. It has 2 sets of 16 playing pieces one for each player composed of one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Both players take turns in moving a piece in accordance with the game rules but not during castling where two pieces are allowed to move. Usually the player with the light colored pieces go first and the piece can land on an empty square or one which is occupied by an opponents piece but will be captured and removed from the game. The World Chess Federation maintains the rules and regulations of the game.

Head Spinning Word Board Games

Several board games that revolve around words including word search types, crossword puzzle types, bluff word games, and others belong to the word board games genre. Scrabble is the most famous of all the word games and is played by most people worldwide. Twenty nine different language versions of this game had been created and are sold in 121 countries. The game played by 2-4 players makes use of tiles with letters having particular values and are used by players to form words on a 15-by-15 cell grid board holding one letter much like in crossword puzzle down and across. Players draw individual tile and the one who gets the letter closest to the letter A goes first and moves along in the same order all throughout the game. The words formed should be the acceptable ones that appear in a standard dictionary of any language. The player with the most number of points is deemed the winner. Mumble-Jumble, Acronymble, Alfapet, and The Da Vinci Code are among the other word board game alternatives.

The Stirring Dungeon Board Game

There are board games that allow individual player to portray or guide a special character that increases its abilities and characteristics or even gain gears as the game continues like the adventure board games. Released in 1975, the Dungeon created by S. Schwab, David R. Megarry, Steve Winter, and Gary Gygax was the pioneer in adventure board games. The game designed for two to four players consists of a rulebook, four colored Parcheesi-style playing pieces (white, blue, green, and red). Included in the game which fascinates players is a range of monster and treasure cards which is colored black and white on the front and at the back are color coded representing the different six increasing dungeon levels: gold for first, orange for second, red for third, magenta for fourth, green for fifth, and blue for sixth. The game is played with every players goal to defeat the monsters and collect as much treasures as possible back to the dungeon entrance. There have been later versions like the Dungeon and Dragons.

Clever Deduction Board Games

Board games that require a player to make use of ones intellectual ability to make logical judgment based on a particular premise fall under the category of deductive board games. A central mechanic of these games would include deductive reasoning to win the game. The two expansive categories of deduction board games are investigation deductive game, a themed game and the abstract deductive game, a non-themed game. An example of abstract deductive board game is mastermind, a code-breaking game of 2 players acting as a code maker and code breaker. The code maker pins up pegs on the game board in a specific pattern and the objective of the game is for the code breaker to guess the pattern of the colored pegs. Another is an investigation game called the Cluedo, which players depict a certain character, has a murder crime scene setting and players try to find out who the suspect of the crime is. Other games that have the same genre include Black Box, Codam and Mystery Mansion.
