Celebrate Your Anniversary--even On A Budget

My spouse and I are preparing to celebrate our third anniversary

, and we couldn't be more excited. But the truth is, with bills to pay and obligations to meet, there isn't much money or time to designate solely for this special occasion, even if we would like to spend the whole month celebrating.

When you have to juggle work, children, a home, and countless other responsibilities, it can be hard to steal a few moments for yourself! It's even more challenging when you are trying to work under the constraint of a tight budget. But believe me, it can be done! I can share a few tips with you so you two can enjoy a perfectly romantic anniversary.

Try to plan in advance if at all possible. Nothing spoils a special day like being disorganized and having other things drop onto your plate at the last minute. So contact a sitter or get in touch with the grandparents to take the children for one evening.

Instead of trying to get together the funds for a fancy getaway, you might consider staying a single night--maybe two if you can spare the change--at a resort in the city where you live. If you have paid vacation time, you might even take a day off during the week, as hotel rates are always cheaper on weeknights.

Make reservations at your favorite restaurant. Some restaurants offer rewards programs which allow frequent diners to earn free drinks, appetizers, and main courses. Others offer complimentary certificates for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries.

Or, on the other hand, you can try something new. One of the best ways to cut down the check at a restaurant is to avoid ordering drinks. Stick to water, which is also healthier anyway. Cut out the appetizer, too. The important thing is to enjoy each other's company, not to stuff yourselves, so focus on being together.

If you splurge on a suite at a local hotel, you might even cook dinner together rather than going out for a bite, as most suites have a full-service kitchen. Check out gourmet recipes online and then get the ingredients from a nearby grocery store. This can be so much fun, especially when you don't have to worry about appeasing the appetites of all the little ones at home.

Throw an anniversary party for yourselves. My parents know three other couples whose anniversaries are close to theirs, so they have an annual party. There aren't any gifts exchanged, so there's no pressure, but they get to share the special day with other couples they care about.
