It has been almost two months since the 2010-11 NBA season began and with more than 20 games disputed by each team, they all have now a clear vision of where they stand and what their needs really are. If the regular season was to end on December 14 we wouldn't find many changes in comparison to the previous season, as 16 out of the 18 playoff spots at stake would have been occupied by the same franchises.
The Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks would be once again representing the Eastern Conference along with the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers as the new faces, taking over the seats left vacant by the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Charlotte Bobcats.
And the Western Conference representatives wouldn't suffer modifications, since for second season in a row the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunders, Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns would be occupying the top 8 seats.
One of the teams that is having a great performance is New York that last season finished with 29-53 record, and so far this season they are on the right track to overpass those stats by a wide margin, as they have won 16 games out of 25 already. The fruits of the highest scoring offense in the league are starting to show off with an eight-win streak, to occupy the second place of the Atlantic Division, just four games behind the 2010 NBA Finals runner-up Boston.
The Knicks is one of the teams interested in the Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony, and the interest happens to be reciprocal as Anthony has stated that the only contract extension that he would sign if traded would be just with New York. The Knicks players that interest the Nuggets are Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry and Landry Fields, along with a No. 1 draft pick. But the Knicks have no rush as their team is performing at a very good level and they could sign Anthony next summer as an unrestricted free agent.
The teams that have inaugurated this trade season are the New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets and the Lakers through a three-way deal that works like this: the Nets get Sasha Vujacic from the Lakers and also LA's 2011 first round pick and Houston's lottery protected 2012 pick. LA receives the veteran Joe Smith and two 2011 second round picks from New Jersey, as well as Houston's draft rights to Sergei Lishchuk. And the Rockets get Terrence Williams from the Nets.
And the Rockets didn't stop there, as they agreed to send Jermaine Taylor to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for a conditional second round pick.
