Caravan Holidays In Eastern England

Caravan Holidays In Eastern England

The East of England contains two very interesting counties

, Norfolk and Essex. Norfolk is a bit of an anomaly as it is England's only 'waterlogged' county, and as a result it gets a lot of visitors who come to take advantage of it's numerous waterways. It is also a flat county so it gets many cycling visitors who see a bicycle as a great way of casually seeing the countryside, not an endurance test.

Essex is almost practically a suburb of London with coastline thrown in. For many years Southend on Sea and Clacton on Sea saw much of the population of London 'up sticks' for a couple of weeks and invade for a summer vacation. With the cost of holidays abroad going down in the 1970s this reduced the number of visitors, however, with the current economic downturn many holiday parks in places such as Essex are seeing a dramatic increase in numbers.

Essex is a 'very old' county, and as such it has much to offer the visitor who enjoys a bit of history and culture. You don't have to travel too far inland from its marvelous beaches to find small towns and villages that have remained relatively unchanged for years. Many places such as Thaxted have had the same population for two hundred years which means many of the original buildings still remain. The area is dotted with quaint little 'stop offs', and it is worth getting a guide before going or, at the very least, a visit to the tourist information centre is a must.

The majority of campsites in Essex are located at Clacton on Sea, which has a pier, and all the attractions that you would expect at a traditional British seaside resort. The area has it's fair share of attractions for adults and children. The award winning Colchester Zoo is one of the new breed of zoos that whilst providing entertainment and fun for the family, also has conservation, and animal care as it's primary ethos. No seaside vacation would be complete without a trip to the funfair, and Adventure Island in Southend has over sixty rides, several of which are designed for small children. Norfolk is a slightly different proposition as a vacation destination. Whilst it does have lovely beaches, and Great Yarmouth is a famous tourist resort, it's coast is less developed as many areas are considered to be of natural significance. The National Nature Reserve of Holkham receives many visitors who come to see rare wildlife that is abundant in a range of habitats. The waterways of Norfolk have undergone a massive clean up over the past few years, and have returned to their former glory, which makes them a haven for wildlife, and a source of tranquil beauty for visitors.Caravan Holidays In Eastern England

Most people come to Norfolk for a bit of peace and quiet, and to watch life go by at a nice easy pace. Even Norwich its capital, which has restaurants, and plenty of old buildings, still remains a sleepy city, not untouched by the modern world, but not overly effected by it either. Norfolk is an ideal destination if you have a bicycle to take with you as most of the area can cycled without having to strain up any hills. Obviously you should take your helmet and safety gear, but another important thing to pack is a picnic rucksack, there are many quiet pubs in the area to stop off for a bit of lunch, but nothing beats finding a beautiful spot of shade under a riverside willow, and setting up for a picnic.

If you do fancy a bit of excitement before heading home, then Great Yarmouth does have its Pleasure Beach with Roller-coaster rides and everything else that you would expect from a traditional seaside park. There's also a log flume, so if its a hot sunny day head on over for a splash of water do cool you down, or just have a dip in the sea.

Both Norfolk and Essex have been popular summer getaways for years, and with so much to see and do it is likely to stay that way for a long time to come. All you have to do is decide whether its the fun of the fair that you are after, or the tranquility of the countryside.
