Another month and more job loses reported. Twenty-two consecutive months of job loss and although the economy reported a slight gain and grew in the third quarter following the longest and deepest downturn since the Great Depression.
Most of those who had lost a job and are receiving unemployment benefits are not finding new jobs due to the fact that the economy is still sluggish and employers are not hiring. Currently our unemployment rate is above ten percent. The last time the rate of unemployed Americans reached 10% was in 1983.
Teen unemployment is more than double at 27.6%, up 1.8 percentage points and hitting a third straight record high. Those with college degrees the unemployment rate fell slightly from 4.9% to 4.7%. Unemployed factory workers increased from 14.1% to 14.5% indicating that orders for hard goods and demand for manufactured commodities have not increased.
The evidence is hard to over look that construction worker unemployment rate has increased from 14.3% to 15.5%. With all the foreclosed homes still being auctioned off, the demand for new homes, office space and commercial construction is not any where near a turn around.
