Butchart Gardens! Open daily all year, so you can walk through our 22 acres of flower gardens. You'll notice that a haven for gardeners will be offered to you and photographers and romantics. Our wonderful afternoon tea, and our fine dining options are simple to make your visit complete.
The first garden was started in 1904 by Jennie Butchart, who began to beautify the old limestone quarry that had been exploited by her husband for a cement company. Started with a few plants of peas and some roses, Sunken Gardens have become the focal point for visitors.
For over a century, the Butchart family has given so much to horticulture as entertainment, and they continue to receive around one million people each year. In 2004, Butchart Gardens were recognized as National Historic Site of Canada.
There are five major areas, parks connected by beautifully maintained lawns and paths. These areas are: the Sunken Garden, the Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Italian Garden and the Mediterranean Garden. More than fifty gardeners working all year to keep the gardens in excellent condition. Each year about one million plants in the raised beds are used to ensure uninterrupted bloom from March to October. In the other months, visitors enjoy the plants that are colorful berries and wonderful shapes of shrubs and trees.
The Prelude to Spring
Shortly after finishing the holidays, within the broad Restaurant Blue Poppy (Blue Poppy) is turned into a spring garden. The trails lead through tropical plants, flowering cherry trees, colorful plants and spring bulbs. The scents of spring fill the air. A portion of the original residence of the Butchart family, has been converted to display in our history. This is also the season of weddings at Butchart Gardens, which is when the happy couples can book the place for your wedding, photographs and receptions for up to sixty people.
Spring
The splendor of 250,000 plants daffodils and tulips await. This is the time when the rhododendrons, azaleas and many flowering trees begin their magnificent display. The gardens are alive with many colors and scents of spring.
Summer
A major attraction for visitors is the Rose Garden with about 250 varieties, offering their beautiful colors, shapes and sizes and delightful fragrances. The continuous planting of annual flowers will dazzle all gardens. In the main summer months, you can also enjoy entertainment in the Park concerts, and summer nights on Saturdays, you'll enjoy one of the best fireworks in the world. Because gardens are open late at night, you can walk through the softly lit gardens and enjoy the contrasting personalities that you see during the day.
Autumn
This is the time of the begonias and dahlias, and also the time to see the sumptuous beds of perennials. The fall colors reach their glorious shades in October, when the Japanese Garden sparkles with red and gold colors.
Winter
