The MINI Countryman four-door is all Mini Cooper, but not quite so mini anymore.
The concept for this crossover was first revealed at the 2008 Paris Auto Show and it has been well worth the wait. The 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman will land on the shores of the U.S. in January and Boston Convertible fans are waiting eagerly.
This Mini is already collecting fun nicknames like MaxiMini and Mega Mini, but the fact remains that it still is pretty small - just not for a Mini. As the largest Mini model yet, it measures 161.3 inches, just 5.5 inches longer than the Mini Clubman. Rhode Island Convertible buyers will like the extra space offered in the new Countryman.
More important than it actual size is its interior space. The Mini Countryman can carry five as long as you get the bench seat. It won't even cost your extra. The bench seat can adjust forward and backward and has a 60/40 split. The seatback cushions also can recline to allow for a 12.2 cubic-foot cargo space.
Don't worry, there's plenty of room for baby paraphernalia, groceries or even a small canine friend. Probably just not all at once. But if you need more space, the rear seats can fold into the floor and provide 41 cubic feet of storage. This space can even handle two bicycles if you take the front wheels off.
Or those bikes can take a very disproportionate ride on top with the factory roof rack. You get to choose the color of your roof - body color, black or white. Sometimes the little choices are a big deal. But before you jump on target white or matchy-matchy body color, consider the pillars are all black and you may get a pattern going if you're not careful. The engine on the Mini Countryman uses BMWs Valvetronic variable valve lift system with twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder has 181 horsepower. Using the familiar six-speed manual gearbox, the Mini means fun driving.
You can get your Countryman with all-wheel drive, Mini calls it ALL4, and it will give you some advantage in snow. This little big version of the Mini won't come cheap, though. Even without the extras it will start around $30,000.
Even with a price tag ranging up to $40,000 with lots of amenities, Boston Convertible lovers won't be able to resist the Mini Countryman. Those of you who are really serious about your Minis may want to hold off until January to buy yourself a holiday gift.
