Beware of Offers to Receive Large Amounts of Money

Beware of Offers to Receive Large Amounts of Money

Dishonest people and outright criminals are trying to scam people (often senior citizens) into thinking they can receive huge sums of money for doing nothing. Emails are used currently in great numbers to try to cheat people out of their money. They often claim to be from the United Kingdom. You should definitely suspect a scam when they use poor English grammar which may be indicative of a Nigerian scam or another such scam from a different country. Beware of these fake offers of money which can drain your savings and make your life miserable.

Email providers are now doing their part to try and help people avoid being scammed by these con artists. Many of these offers for money are recognized by the email providers as junk mail and are put into the spam mailbox. There is so much spam in my own email that I generally empty the junk mail without looking at it, and I do not see or read those types of emails although I have seen them in the past. One day I decided to take a quick look in the spam box to see what was there, and some emails did offer large sums of money.

It is gratifying that the email providers are doing something else besides putting those bad emails into the spam box. A warning comes up that is highlighted in red at the top of the message. It reads: "WARNING. This message may not be from whom it claims to be. Beware of following any links in it or of providing the sender with any personal information."

Recently a scam which claims to give ATM cards has hit the internet. One email began with "CONGRATULATIONS, INTERNATIONAL MONETARY DEPARTMENT. Your email have brought you an unexpected luck. You have won a free LIFETIME INTERNATIONAL ATM MASTER CARD valued at $3 million dollars only. This card center will send you an ATM card which you will use to withdraw your money in any ATM machine in any part of the world. But, the maximum of $3,500 USD per day." [This message is shown as it arrived with the grammatical errors.]

It goes on to say that this is a charitable lottery which the emailed people did not enter. Instead, their email address was randomly selected using the E-wheel computer ballot system. It says that "the payment center has been mandated to issue out the ATM card in your name once all conditions are abide and provided by you."

They ask for your personal information including name, phone number, fax number, passport or driver's license number. They do not at this point ask for your bank information or your social security number. That comes later after they have you hooked. Then they will scam you out of money in your bank account or have you send them a check. You will never see any of that $3 million dollars which was promised.

They end their email with this message: "WARNING!!! Do not tell people about your Award until your ATM card is successfully handed over to you to avoid disqualification." Either you will never receive an ATM card or it will not work if they do send you one.

Another scam email stated, "Please contact Barrister Joseph for your draft 900 pounds." It went on to say that you may not remember this person but that he had contacted you before about a business proposition. That business was never completed with you, but he did find someone else who was able to work on the business so that it was now finished with money available for distribution. It claims that you are being given this money "due to your effort, sincerity, courage, and trustworthiness" in being a part of it initially. You will just need to contact them to get your money. Of course, this is another version of a scam to cheat you out of your money.

There have been many warnings given by government officials, law enforcement, and the media about scams. Yet people are still falling for them and losing money to them. The bad economy has created hardships for so many people. These offers of money sound like the answer to problems or prayers, but they should be avoided. Guard your personal information and your money. Beware of these scams which always sound too good to be true because most assuredly they are not true.
