If you are a historical aficionado, you will love the many monuments and Native American formations that are scattered around the state
. The Casa Grande Ruins National Museum is one such place; it boast sixty prehistoric Hohokam Indian sites including a 4-story building made completely of earth over 650 years in the past. You will also want to check out the Montezuma Castle National Monument. This is one of the greatest attractions in the Verde Valley. It has cliff houses from as far back as the 12th century and they are sitting 100feet above the ground. It is considered an earthen castle and has over 20 rooms. If this is not enough history for you, try the Tonto National Monument; it was a dwelling place for the Salado peoples. There are also artifacts from that period in the tourist center.The Navajo National Monument presents a view of the ancestral homes. These were the dwellings of the people that populated the land before the "White Man" came. The pueblos are a marvel of construction; the fact that they have survived mostly intact is well worth the price of admission. The natives fed themselves with food by farming in the canyons and hunting the wild animals in the surrounding area. The sandstone bricks are also very unique in their construction.
Visit the Sunset Crater National Monument. Here is a place to photograph dramatic geological formations made by the lava flows from a time when the volcano was active. The eruptions of this mountain completely changed the lives of the peoples in this area as well as the land they knew and loved. From devastation comes new life; this stark reality hits home no better than at the Sunset Crater. You will see trees and flowers once again flourishing in between the vast chunks of hardened lava stone. The Organ Pipe Cactus National monument is also a Government park. It was once a very integral part of the lives of the Hohokam Indians. This was valued as a stop along their trade route. Vestiges of this existence are still present in the area and make for great photos with their historically rich content.
