Benefits Of Post-adoption Counseling

Benefits Of Post-adoption Counseling

Adoption is a process that can provoke many emotions throughout Of course it is a

joyous journey but it is a completely normal both before and after an adoption for a family to have emotions of fear, confusion, apprehension, and of course great happiness as well. Adopted children, however, depending on age and prior history, will also have many of their own emotions to work though as well.

Adoption counseling can be extremely beneficial to a family before the adoption takes place, during the process and after as well. Pre adoption counseling will help you understand the process and guide you as you undergo this commitment. Depending on your situation and that of the child, there can potentially be a lot to prepare for. Pre adoption counseling will help you be prepared for each step.

Post adoption counseling can be experienced individually, as a family, or in a group setting. Parent Group adoption counseling is one type of therapy that offers tremendous support for families going through the adoption process. Sharing experiences as you navigate through the journey of adoption can be extremely beneficial. While the insights of the counselor are important, so much can be gained by simple knowing that you are not alone. Often times, families can feel overwhelmed during their experience. By taking part in adoption counseling, families will have the support and tools needed to endure the sometimes grueling process of adoption.

The adoptive child will benefit as well from adoption counseling. Many children who are adopted have experience complex trauma through attachment disruption, neglect, and/or abuse. If these issues are not addressed in therapy, it can be extremely difficult for the child to adapt and succeed in their new surroundings. For the child, adoption counseling/therapy is not only beneficial, but is often times absolutely necessary for the child to learn new adaptation skills in order to be successful and happy. Of course, the type of therapy needed will differ with the age of the child, but therapy is instrumental in teaching the child how to appropriately express feelings, while aiding the child in healing from trauma and forming healthy attachments.
