Beauty Against All Odds

We all have our flaws, may it be a flabby stomach

, or a crooked nose, or thin lips. So what are we to do to present the best picture forward?

Centuries ago, Egyptians used kohl around their eyes to prettify themselves; Japanese geisha used nightingale droppings for their skin; and, Southern women used rice paper powders. Perhaps the most drastic procedure to be employed then was foot binding by the Chinese, where a girl childs foot is broken into a third of its normal size and bound to achieve lotus feet.

Good for the modern man and woman, advancements in science, cosmetic surgery in particular, now make physical beautification less painful and experimental. For wrinkles, we no longer need to resort to bird droppings like the Japanese of old we have Botox for that. In place of constricting corsets, we now have liposuction. For flat noses, rhinoplasty of nose lift is now available. For those with flat breasts, breast augmentation is a viable option. In modern times, the possibilities to change ones appearance are endless. The question is how much is too much.

23-year old American reality TV starlet Heidi Montage went through no less than 10 cosmetic surgery procedures, and forums are bursting about reactions on her transformation. Not surprisingly, her drastic change has given rise to a bevy of strong emotions, most of which are negative. A lot also speculated on why she went through such lengths to alter her appearance. Some say that American culture, its obsession with Barbie in particular, highly influenced Heidis decision to undergo cosmetic surgery. There is a flaw in this reasoning, in my opinion. If it really is Barbies fault, why not every woman who grew up with Barbie feels the urge to mold her appearance to that of the famous doll? The conclusion that I agree with the most is that culture has very little to do with how a person in general aspires to a different appearance; the desire, or the need, to look better in the eyes of the beholder is based on how one perceives oneself.

No matter the reason, there is anything; we can do if someone wants to undergo cosmetic surgery for whatever reason. As long as it makes one feels better about oneself, I find no cause for complaint. However, as for me, I am happy with what I was born with, and I try to manipulate the way people see me by being a better person or not.
