William H Bates was an unconventional ophthalmologist, who become famous for developing the 'Bates Method' of eyesight improvement. He was a practising ear-nose-throat physician during the early 1900's.

His method of eyesight improvement become very popular with Air Force pilots during World War II. This method is still very popular nowadays.
