Bank Accounts - Choosing The Right Account

A bank account is one of the great necessities of the modern world

. Whilst there are some that would say that you don't really need a one, living in today's society would be extremely difficult without.

So what do you need an account for? Well, for one, there's the issue of keeping your money safe and secure. Banks have spent years perfecting security arrangements and have the necessary insurance in place to deal with any lost funds. You'd be foolish to assume that you could keep the same level of safety and security at home.

Then you move onto the issue of having somewhere to pay your salary into and having the means to pay bills via direct debit and standing order. Many employers have now moved to paying wages by direct deposit, so you'll need a bank account just to get access to your well earned cash.

So now you know why you actually need to have an account with a bank you now need to decide what type of account you need. Think about what you'll be using your account for, the level of service and the different types of features you may need access to.

If you're young and have a relatively simple financial life then a basic bank account may be suitable for you. This type of account offers just the most basic banking features such as the ability to have wages paid in, the ability to pay direct debits and access to your cash through a cash card to use in the cash machine. A basic account may also be suitable for someone with a bad credit history and provide a good service as bank accounts for bad credit.

If you're working and have a reasonable amount of money flowing in and out of your account then a current account may be the most suitable option. Offering many more features such as online banking, overdrafts, debit cards, cheque books and credit cards, the current account is designed to make managing your money a little bit easier. You'll also get variations of these types of accounts for students and graduates so talk to your bank about what might be available to you.

Perhaps you're looking to start saving some money on a regular basis. If you are then a savings account may be just what you need. Often offering a little bit of a return in interest you will be able to keep your money safe whilst watching it grow in line with the interest rate you are offered.

Before you make your final decision on which bank account to choose you should do your research and have a look at all the different features and benefits available to you. Also, don't forget to check the charges on each account, you'll be surprised how different they can be!
