Unlike the market leader, Bajaj doesn't believes in fiddling with older bikes. Few years back, Bajaj introduced an all new platform called XCD which is now put to grave. XCD came in two avatars 125cc and 135cc but failed to excite buyers.
Last year, Bajaj sales dipped to historic low. But, Bajaj is back with a new strategy. Bajaj has introduced more than six bikes in 2009 and is closing the gap with Hero Honda. Ever since we saw the XCD sprint at 2008 Auto Expo, our eyes are waiting to see the bike in showrooms. Bajaj Pulsar">Bajaj Pulsar in larger sense resembles the XCD sprint. The chiselled headlamps and front cowl are the most attractive part of the bike.
The tank scoops and wire mesh are nice aesthetic touches. But i wish it is made of steel and exudes solid character. The rest of the styling are carried forward from its elder siblings. The split grab rail and LED tail lamps are reminiscents of Discover 135cc.
Bajaj claims the Pulsar 135LS is the first bike in the world to come with 4 valve DTSi engine. The 4 valve engine displaces 135cc engine and develops a maximum power of 13.5PS at 9000rpm. The engine pumps out 11.4Nm of max torque at 7500rpm.
According to Bajaj, this 4 valve set-up not just results in better performance but also better mileage. Pulsar 135LS comes with a standard 5-speed manual transmission. According to ARAI, pulsar 135LS returns 68.1km/l.
Switch on the ignition, the engine starts with distinct pulsar thrum. The rev friendly engine happily revs to higher rpm in each gear giving the bike a sporty edge. It also enables the bike to chug along at low speeds.
We manage to hit a top speed of 104kmph in our short test drive. Bajaj claim of 112kmph top speed is very much achievable. The power is available on tap at all speeds credits the cleverly spaced gear ratios.
The low set handlebar and saddle height makesup for commuter-ish stance rather than sporty. The telescopic fork at the front and gas charged suspension at the rear with rectangular swingarm forms the suspension set-up. We tested the bike over bumpy roads and monstrous speedbrakers. The the suspension is tuned for sporty ride and ride quality is little compromised for the same.
The shorter wheelbase and light steering makes the Pulsar 135LS suitable for aspiring racers. The bike's ultra low weight (122kg) makes the rider more confident around corners. The rubbers provide adequate grip. Braking is progressive and its stopping power is impressive. Pulsar 135LS uses 240mm disc at the front and 130mm drum at the rear.
As typical of any Bajaj's product, Pulsar 135LS comes with loads of features. Digitial speedometer,auto choke, split seats,split grab rail, LED tail lamps, electric start,alloy wheels, disc brake and clip-on handlebar.
On the road,Chennai pulsar 135LS costs Rs58,333. Pulsar 135LS comes only in two colours passion red and midnight black.
To many pulsar fans, Bajaj Pulsar">Bajaj Pulsar Test Drive may sound strange and degrading their fav brand. But for everyone who drives its the perfect pulsar junior. Pulsar 135LS inherits the pulsar DNA sporty riding for commuters.
Pulsar 135LS is also cheap (almost by Rs10,000) making the pulsar brand reachable to more commuters too. Pulsar 135LS will stand tall and succeed. But the target of 35000units/month seems to be little ambitious.
