Sydney
Sydney is Australia's largest, loudest and most diverse city. Famous for its twinkling Sydney Harbour, you can't take a ferry or drive across this dramatic stretch of water without tingling in awe. Explore the city's fascinating history by strolling through The Rocks; surf a wave or two at the legendary Bondi Beach; or take a long walk along one of the stunning stretches of harbour; or head to Manly for more sun, sand and fun than a city should legitimately have! Life is Sydney is all about being outside. Everywhere you look, people are walking running, swimming, cycling or sailing. The beaches are buzzing, the hundreds of cafes are packed and the harbour is swarming with sails.
Sydneysiders love their food and you can pretty much find a restaurant to suit your lifestyle, budget or taste. Head to China Town for cheap, tasty Asian food; Surry Hills and Darlinghurst have a trendy restaurant, caf and bar scene; and fashionable city suburb, Paddington has some great old pubs amongst the leafy streets, boutiques and immaculately maintained terraced houses.
Taronga Zoo is a must do if you're visiting the city, spectacularly set on the edge of Sydney Harbour, it's a great place to see Australia's native wildlife. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) overlooking Circular Quay is worth a visit; as is the Aboriginal section of the Australian Museum. Explore the Rocks, wander amongst the sandstone heritage buildings, and learn about Sydney's colonial past at the Susannah Place Museum. A highlight for tourists and locals alike is taking in a performance at the spectacular Sydney Opera House.
Heading out of Sydney, the Hunter Valley is a popular weekend trip with the locals, with its numerous wineries and top-notch dining spots. Hiking in the Blue Mountains or simply inhaling the clean mountain air is also on the agenda for anyone visiting Sydney.
Melbourne
Australia's second biggest city, Melbourne, is an urban, edgy and multicultural city with a lively cultural scene, thanks to its dynamic blend of arts, fashion and cuisine. If you're visiting Melbourne, take some time to soak it all up. Take an amble along the leafy, European boulevards or get lost amongst the famous laneways; read a book in one of the many cafes or parks; or admire the contemporary architecture of Federation Square. To truly experience Melbourne you should catch one of the trams which rattle around the city; or to be a true Melburnian, ride a bike and take in this relaxed, yet buzzing city, bursting with the good things in life.
Outside the CBD, head along to Fitzroy which is brimming with trendy cafes, bohemian shops and alternative art galleries. Similarly, St Kilda is a cool, beachy place to kick back and soak up the atmosphere, take a walk along the foreshare; go shopping in boutique or two; or grab a coffee in one of the many independent book stores and cute cafes
