Australian Champion Thoroughbred: Better Loosen Up
The Australian racing tracks at the beginning of the 1990s was dominated by what trainer David Hayes called 'a terribly lazy horse'. Better Loosen Up, by Loosen Up, out of Better Fancy, is an Australian thoroughbred racehorse foaled in Berrigan, New South Wales in 1985. Under trainer Les Theodore, the bay gelding won the Bendigo Handicap as a two-year-old, finishing the 1987/88 season with 1 win from four starts. After his stint with Les Theodore, Better Loosen Up joined the stables of Bart Cummings in Sydney in an effort to regain form as a three year old. Better Loosen Up obliged Cummings with 4 wins and a 2nd spot in the Canterbury Guineas. However, by the end of the season his figures weren't that impressive with only five wins from 16 starts. His statistics for the 1988/89 season wins in the STC Canterbury, AJC Tatt's, AJC Handicap for 3-year olds, and the STC Welter Handicap. The late developing Better Loosen Up got another chance to prove himself under the trainer Colin Hayes in the spring of 1989. A close 2nd on Caulfield Cup day was then followed by 3 Group 1 wins which included the Honda Stakes, Winfield Stakes and Railway Stakes. Bart Cummings reaffirmed his faith in the horse at the beginning of the 1990 racingseason which Better Loosen Up obliged with an excellent show in the Blamey Stakes defeating Super Impose, followed by a 2nd place in the Australian Cup, and a win over Vo Rogue in the Segenhoe Stakes. The heavy tracks in the Mercedes Classic and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the end of the season caused the gelding to lose to Sydeston on both occasions. Better Loosen Up seemed to be getting better every season. After Colin Hayes' retirement at the end of the 1989-1990 season, David Hayes took over the gelding, only to form a formidable duo on the turf. After a minor setback in the Liston Stakes, a series of success races followed with the Feehan Stakes, Cox Plate, Turnbull Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes, and Japan Cup all in the kitty. The Cox Plate was one of the most memorable victories coming from 30 lengths behind to win in record time. His win in the Mackinnon Stakes brought David Hayes a world record of six Group winners. In the Cox Plate, Better Loosen Up had come from an approximately 30 lengths from the lead to take victory in course record time; in the Mackinnon Stakes, on Derby Day, he was one of a 'world record' six Group winners for his trainer. The Japan Cup victory brought great honors as Better Loosen Up remains the only Australian Horse to win the Cup. For Hayes and his horse, 1991 was a very successful year in which the gelding was named Australia's champion racehorse of the year. As a 5 and 6 year old, Better Loosen Up defeated the best in his class in Australia and internationally. A leg injury restricted his starts as a six and seven year old, with his best performance coming in the 1992 Cox Plate, beating Super Impose by over a length. Better Loosen Up retired from racing in February 1993 to Living Legends, the home of champion horses in Melbourne. The gelding's victories made his connections richer by $4,773,970, and a great race record of 17 wins from 45 starts which included 9 seconds and 3 thirds. This great record brought Better Loosen Up a place in the Australian Hall of Fame in 2004.
