Summer temperatures average 84.3 degrees. It is not unusual for the temperature to reach 100 degrees during the summer, sometimes for several days in a row. In fact, Austin has an average of 111 days each year with temperatures above 90 degrees. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Austin was 112 degrees. That record was set in the year 2000. If you love sunshine, you will love Austin, Texas. Austin has more than three hundred days of sunshine annually. If you are planning to spend a lot of time outdoors in Austin, remember to put on your sunscreen so that you can enjoy the great outdoors without getting burnt.
Although Texas is located in the notorious tornado alley, tornadoes rarely occur within the city of Austin itself. Thunderstorms, however, occur fairly frequently, especially in the spring and fall months. Austin receives around thirty-two inches of rain each year. Austin's thunderstorms are occasionally severe, with extreme wind gusts and hail. Although tornadoes within the city are rare, you should still take necessary precautions. Make sure your family knows what to do if the tornado siren sounds. If you do hear the tornado warning siren, take it seriously. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Austin occurred in 1949, when the temperature reached a frigid -2 degrees. Fortunately, most winters are nowhere near that cold. Snow lovers, however, might be disappointed by Austin's mild winters. Austin rarely receives measurable snow, and when snow does fall it rarely stays on the ground more than a day or two. Temperatures during the winter average around 50 degrees. Austin does experience occasional cold spells, however, so make sure you keep a sweater in your closet just in case.
