Photo-refractive Keratectomy (PRK): In the nineties, this laser treatment was first introduced and performed in Germany. A surgical instrument is used by the surgeon to remove the outer layer of the cornea. Once epithelium is removed, tiny amounts of tissue that are present under the surface of the cornea are vaporized by the surgeon using a laser beam. Once this is done, the cornea is reshaped to correct the vision.
Lasik (Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis): The Lasik treatment is different because here the surgeon uses a sharp blade to cut open a flap in the cornea. Once the flap is made, the surgeon then uses a laser beam to remove amounts of tissue from under the surface of the cornea. The flap is put back on. The eye heals faster after the Lasik treatment as compared to PRK.
Wavefront Lasik: Wavefront Lasik is a new technology in all laser Lasik treatments. It ensures better and faster recovery post operation and also much better results. With this technology, detailed mapping of the eye is achieved, which enables the surgeon to make extremely precise and calculated correction.
Lasek (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis): This technique is a variation of Lasik and PRK. Here, a sharp blade is used to cut the epithelium, which is then loosened and fitted in a single layer using alcohol. The laser beam is then used just like in PRK. Epi-Lasik is a variation of Lasek and makes use of a blunt knife and a mechanical device.
