Wreaths are very popular home decorations during the holidays, especially during Christmas season. We adorn our homes with Christmas wreaths in many different ways. Outdoor wreaths are hung on our front doors, fresh Christmas wreaths hang beautifully above the fireplace, or some wreaths are laid on our table as our centerpiece for Christmas.
But those wreath centerpiece that has four to five candles on it are not like any ordinary holiday wreaths. They are actually called Advent wreaths which are a Christian tradition that are typically in horizontal form with four to five candles as mentioned. Some of us may think that Advent wreaths are simply a beautiful centerpiece for our home but they are a symbol of the passage of the four-week Advent in liturgical calendar of the Western church.
We usually buy Christmas wreaths and other Christmas decorations months or weeks before Christmas but actually, part of the tradition is that people should buy their Advent wreaths four weeks before Christmas. Then every Sunday they should lit one candle, two on the next, three on the 3rd Sunday, and finally, four on the last Sunday. Some would include a fifth candle, or what they call the "Christ" candle, that will be lit at Christmas. A bible reading and a prayer are also usually done during the Sundays of Advent.
Before the birth of Christianity, Advent wreaths made of evergreen and with a candle on it are a symbol in northern Europe already. The circle symbolizes the unending cycle of the seasons while the evergreens and lighted candles symbolizes the persistence of life during winter.
There are still a lot of Christians who follow the tradition of the Advent wreath. But for most of us who doesn't, simple outdoor wreaths hung on our front doors can already make our home beautiful for Christmas. These wreaths are great ornaments that welcome our guests at home and their joyous appearance gives a positive atmosphere towards us.
