Abu Dhabi holidays 2011: The place to be

Abu Dhabi really is well poised to take the travel industry by storm, and it comes as no surprise to those in the know we've seen this coming for a while!

Abu Dhabi's tourism authority is aiming for 1.9 million guests to descend on the emirate in 2011, a realistic figure based on a 22% rise in tourists from the UK and Ireland in 2010 compared to the confirmed statistics of visitors in 2009. See the range of Abu Dhabi hotels.

Green initiatives, brand new hotels and attractions are all putting Abu Dhabi firmly on the map, and we've noticed in particular a real rise in booking for the colossal and deeply luxurious Emirates Palace, which is often mistook as a Presidential Palace. The strange thing is, it is a fully functioning palace as well as a 5* deluxe hotel!

Saadiyat Island is also developing at a rate of knotts but I will leave developments there for another day, suffice to say that this 27 sq km island is being transformed into a signature cultural, leisure and residential destination in its own right.

Visitors to Abu Dhabi now have a wealth of options available to them with more on the way in the form of the Guggenheim Museum and Le Louvre, which are currently in the swings of construction. The sensational Ferrari World on Yas Island is a theme park for petrol heads and lovers of the great automobile, but also brilliant for families as the park features some incredible rides and attractions like the world's fastest rollercoaster.

Ferrari World is located next door to the Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on an annual basis. This is something else to really draw the crowds, along with the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, the Desert Challenge rally, the Red Bull Air Race and the Gourmet Abu Dhabi gastronomic festival.

If large scale events and attractions aren't really your bag, you can take in the culture and heritage of the city with dune bashing in the desert, tours of the local souks, water sports, or even island hopping, few people actually know that Abu Dhabi is an archipelago with nearly 200 islands dotted along its coastline.

Look out for my blogs over the next couple of weeks as I take a closer focus on Abu Dhabi and Al Ain as key destinations for Destinology in 2011.
