?The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! If we got that about ADHD medications, that would be wonderful and I would not even have to write this article. We are talking here about the well known psychotropic drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall and Vyvanse.

That sounds marvellous but the fact of the matter is that if you look at the FDA site and the warnings issued about these ADHD medications, then you are in for a shock.
All these are Schedule II drugs, as they are basically amphetamines. That means it is illegal to take them without a doctor's prescription. Secondly they carry the infamous black box warning and that is the maximum there is. That means that the FDA is worried about the side effects such as sudden death from heart attacks in very few cases where children are predisposed because of a heart condition.
But the majority of side effects do actually cause children and parents to cease this type of treatment and are much more common. Some estimates put these at 30%. The effects are loss of appetite, sleep problems and stunted growth. In fact there are loads of studies which show that this has been documented and ADHD children on these drugs are actually shorter and weigh less than their peers.
Experts now favor a comprehensive approach to the ADHD problem where there is much less reliance on the ADHD medications and treatment consists of some medication together with behavior therapy or simply parenting skills. Then attention to diet and enough green time usually completes the picture.
