A Number Of Orthodox Vitiligo Treatments You May Consider

Vitiligo is a health condition in which pigmentation is lost in the skin

. The result of this is that white patches occur anywhere on the body such as the face, arms, nose, genitals or stomach. Although there are now several credible vitiligo treatments, these do not cure the condition but instead make it more bearable by reducing the visibility of the skin patches.

The most widely used treatment for vitiligo is steroid creams. These are somewhat successful in reducing the visibility of the vitiligo patches, and are particularly effective if used when the condition is just starting. Application of corticosteroid cream is a treatment that produces results over a long period of time, with at least 90 days of use prior to seeing any results. It's important that you take these creams and the supervision of a dermatologist. The reason for this is that there are secondary streaking lesions that can appear.

Ultraviolet A therapy, also called PUVA therapy, is a stronger vitiligo treatment aimed at darkening the white patches that have developed. After taking certain oral medicines for a period of time the patient is then subjected to a session of exposure to an ultraviolet lamp. The patient while on this vitiligo treatment must be careful to avoid sunlight exposure at other times.

Another widely used therapy involves psoralen which is applied to the vitiligo patches. After this they are exposed to UVA light until a pink coloration shows. The hope is that the pink color will fade and be replaced with a more normal skin tone.

Depigmentation therapy involves the application of the drug monobenzone to the skin surrounding the white patches in an effort to fade that pigmentation and bring all the skin into color alignment.

Other treatment methods are more invasive and involve surgery. These include full tissue grafts in which skin is taken from other areas and grafted onto the affected area. Other techniques attempt to transplant pigment cells only.

Not everyone chooses to treat their vitiligo. A very well-known celebrity chose to use cosmetics to mask his vitiligo problem. This is an approach that anyone can use.
