A Few Tips Before Approaching Childrens Book Publishers

Writing a childrens book is definitely not childs play

. You have to captivate, create magic and yet retain a high literary quality suitable for little ones and their parents as well. From sweet illustrated books written in verse to fantasy books catered to slightly older kids and young adults like Harry Potter, the childrens book arena has exploded in the past decade. Some kids books are so well written, that even adults get engrossed and captivated! It has definitely become a popular sphere and childrens book publishers are far more discerning when it comes to picking up manuscripts from the thousands they have pouring in.

Before you decide to send your manuscript to a publishing company, it is extremely important to know if they cater to the genre you have decided to work on. A publisher that has never published a childrens book will probably not be inclined to give you the time of day or even have the knowledge and savvy to produce, market and sell these kinds of books in the right way. Once you do find a few suitable ones, make sure you send in the manuscript as prescribed by their guidelines and preferences.

Another factor to be mindful of is the illustrations. If your book is going to have illustrations, do not just create some of your own if you are not a professional illustrator because it can definitely affect the overall perception of your work. If you decide not to work with a professional illustrator before sending it in or dont have one you rather work with, you could probably send a few samples as an example of the kind of work your book would ideally have. Some agencies who do publish childrens books also have their own preferred professional contacts. And of course if you are a writer and illustrator do send in multiple samples of your work to showcase the best possible ones.

One step that you cannot miss out on is to do your homework about the current state of childrens literature and the childrens publishing industry. Check out different publications, magazines, books etc. that are in the same genre as you are aspiring to write and publish, find out if there are any seminars, workshops and the like to help you build contacts and gain knowledge etc. You will have to pay attention to the latest trends and happenings in the childrens book industry to get a pulse of what is popular and what is selling nowadays. You could even check out book shops and libraries and talk to staff about what has been flying off the shelves lately. And of course remember to send in your manuscript to multiple publishing companies who work in this arena and not just solely childrens book publishers, to increase your chances.
