A Child's View on Divorce

A Child's View on Divorce

Children's view about life and the world is different from adults

. Children live in a world where life is good and sweet. A child needs both parents in his life -that is, living in one roof and eating at one table. When a child is faced in a situation where he has no control over--like divorce--different emotions are felt but they all have the same effect: trauma.

The steps in dealing with divorce for children varies. Like for a 5- or an 8-year-old kid, for sure, they will get hurt and feel afraid. For a teenager, the concern and uncertainty is felt, and they tend to think that they are the reason for the separation. Older children who are living independently can have a total grasp of the situation but, like any child, they will also feel displeased and disappointed. When parents divorce, the child also experiences the same pain and stress that this situation brings.

A broken marriage also greatly affects a child's development. Children with divorced parents usually have poor school performance, low grades and manifest early signs of violence.

Counseling should be strongly considered when kids are exposed to divorce. But, it is of prime importance that the parents should talk to their children and keep them informed. Parents must assure their kids that they will not be left behind, that they are still loved, and they are not the reason why the marriage of their parents failed. Children expect that their parents are there to support and take care of them, and just because their parents won't be living under the same roof, doesn't mean that they won't be there for them.
