What's Difference Between 2g And 3g Mobile Phone Coverage?

What's Difference Between 2g And 3g Mobile Phone Coverage?

How often do you consider coverage when buying a mobile phone

? These days, phones are all about how good the touch screen is, or how cheap the monthly plan can get, but while the handset you buy and the deal you get are obviously very important, the actual signal you can receive is also something that you need to consider. There's no use having a really great internet phone if you can never seem to find a good signal in order to get on the internet in the first place! Mobile phones basically run on two different types of signal, 2G and 3G, and it's important to know what each one can do.

2G mobile phone coverage is what most people understand as the basic 'signal' for a mobile. It controls every day phone usage like calls and text messages and generally you should be able to pick up a 2G signal everywhere. The only places that usually can't pick up a signal are areas that have boundaries that block the signal out. In a rural area this might mean a large hill or valley which stops the signal reaching a mast. In an urban area, this could mean large buildings interfering with the signal, although in most towns in the UK coverage remains pretty constant.

While 2G is important for basic tasks, what most people really want is for their phone to be picking up a 3G signal. This signal operates on a totally different frequency to the standard 2G signal, and this gives it much better clarity, which means it can do more things! 3G is typically what smartphones need to do more complicated tasks like running the internet, or using VOIP services like Skype from your phone. Modern phones with a good 3G signal are also capable of using technology like video conferencing and streaming.

The downside of 3G is that it's usually much more expensive than using 2G, and you'll need a separate 3G data plan in the majority of cases. Shopping around and comparing deals can reduce the cost of 3G usage. The longer your contract the cheaper you can normally find a 3G deal, but even the best deals still have limits on how much you can use the network and 3G use abroad can become astronomically expensive for those on a contract. What's Difference Between 2g And 3g Mobile Phone Coverage?

3G coverage has become much better in the last few years, but 3G still isn't available everywhere. Many rural locations that have no problem with finding a good 2G signal won't be able to get a 3G signal at all, and even some towns struggle to get a stable and fast 3G connection. This situation is improving every day, but it's still worth checking our providers websites and having a look at their 'network maps' which should give you a rough idea of whether or not 3G is available in the areas you are likely to be travelling to.What's Difference Between 2g And 3g Mobile Phone Coverage?

Don't forget that many modern phones can also use wireless technology, which is faster and more reliable than both 2G and 3G, but only available at Wi-Fi hotspots. You can set up your phone to connect to your home wireless network, but when you're out and about you'll need to visit a local bar or coffee shop to gain access, and even then it isn't always free everywhere.
