. The fair is incomparable and is known worldwide. This fair is held at Pushkar, a town which is at a distance of 11Km from Ajmer, in the state of Rajasthan. The town is positioned along the bank of the famous Pushkar Lake which is known for its picturesque beauty. The fair held over here is considered to be the most colorful event in our country. Numerous visitors come from far flung countries to participate in this festival and have fun over here. Something special about this fair is that it is one of its kind as it is trade fair cum cultural fair. The visitors here get lots of opportunities to see and enjoy the cultural beauty of Rajasthan.
It is a belief that the holy lake Pushkar emerged from a lotus petal that fell into this valley from the hands of Lord Bramha (who is considered to be the creator of the earth according to Hindu mythology). The religious water of this holy lake is assumed to purify the soul and mind of the human beings. There are 52 ghats on Pushkar Lake which are thronged by the people. The lake is in existence since ages and has seen the rise and fall of many kingdoms. Pushkar has maintained its sanctity from ages together.
The outstanding Pushkar Mela is held here every year for 5 days in the month of November. This festival is celebrated in the month of Kartik according to the lunar calendar. It begins from Ekadashi and lasts till the night of full moon. It is considered to be auspicious to take dip in this lake during the festival time. The folk dancers and musicians of Rajasthan gather here during this time and add fun to the festival.
This mela is actually the accumulation of 2 or 3 fairs. It is basically a Cattle Fair, here the people come from various villages of the state and participate in the sale and purchase of livestock. Here various animals like Cows, Horses and camels are made to stand in the rows. They are priced in accordance to their health and breed. The animals are decorated by the villagers so that they can get good price against them. One can see here camels in large number and enjoy the culture and custom of Rajasthan.
