The Importance of Dental Care for Puppies

The Importance of Dental Care for Puppies

For humans, dental care is very important not just for physical reasons and benefits but also to prevent certain health conditions. This is the same for dogs too, especially for puppies. Unfortunately, most of the owners are not aware of the importance of proper dental care for puppies until it's too late. Poor dental hygiene and care for puppies can cause serious oral diseases.

When puppies reach their sixth month, they start losing their "baby teeth" starting with their front teeth. During this period, puppies will have a foul breath. It may hurt a little if you try to brush his teeth during this period, if he can't take it, stop brushing his teeth and resume the routine once his permanent teeth comes out.

Some may think that brushing their puppy's teeth is not that important. However, aside from maintaining the overall health of the puppy's teeth, proper dental care can also protect our beloved puppies from various oral problems like halitosis, tooth loss, oral pain and periodontal diseases.

Dental problems may lead to loss of appetite on your dog. There may be times that he won't even eat anything at all. If this happens, your puppy will not get the nutrition and energy he needs making him prone to other diseases thus reducing his life expectancy.

Without brushing their teeth, bacteria will eat the food deposit build-ups in the teeth causing plaque. Plaque can cause an inflammation of the gum line. This inflammation is commonly known as gingivitis that eventually forms a pocket between the gums and the root of the teeth leading to tooth loss. Again, puppies or dogs will find it hard to eat just like us humans when we lost ours.

Brushing your puppy's teeth may look as if it was a very complicated task. In fact, it's just like brushing your own teeth. But it doesn't mean that it's that easy. If it's the first time for you to brush your puppy's teeth, expect a little but unintentional bites here and there. Your puppy doesn't mean it. He's just not used to it. As you regularly brush your puppy's teeth, he will soon get use to it, and brushing his teeth will be additional bonding time for you and your puppy.

It is highly recommended for owners to start a proper dental hygiene routine for their puppies as early as possible. Brushing your puppy's teeth is very easy. Just take it as if you were brushing a baby's teeth. But instead of using a toothbrush start by using your fingers first then replace it with dog tooth brush as your puppy get used to it. Never use human toothpaste in brushing your puppy's teeth since it has negative effects on puppy's body. Dog toothbrush and toothpaste can be brought from a local pet store near your neighbourhood or you can also choose to buy it online.

As their owner, it is our responsibility to give them the care they need. Since the day we have decided to take care of one puppy, we have already accepted the responsibility to keep him in good condition.
