Nato In The Windy City: Plan Travel Accordingly
From May 20 through the 21st, global political leaders will gather in Chicago for
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit hosted by President Barack Obama. This important international diplomatic summit hosts 28 countries from North America, Europe, and Eastern Europe. The Chicago summit is historical, because it will be the first time a U.S. city, other than Washington, D.C., has hosted NATO. Chicagos mayor, Rahm Emanuel, is using the summit as an opportunity to showcase all that the city has to offer as a major cultural and political hub. Hotels will be booked throughout the city in the accommodation of these politicians, their entourages, protestors, students, and the more than 2,000 journalists expected to attend. For many, apartments in Chicago are a more intimate alternative to hotel stays in the Windy City.
Founded in 1949 after World War II, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a premier global security alliance, based on the pledge attack on one is an attack on all. Based in Brussels, Belgium, NATO is a cooperative military defense organization for its 28 member countries. The defense spending of all NATO members collectively amounts to more than 70% of global defense spending. In the early days of NATO, the alliance was barely more than a political association, but its military integration grew under the Korean War and especially the Cold War, with Russia seen as a major foe for the possibility of a Soviet invasion. The first military interventions of NATO occurred in Bosnia from 91 to 95, as a result of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 89 and the break-up of Yugoslavia. Article 5 of the NATO treaty has been invoked only onceto decry the 9/11 attacks as an attack on all of the NATO member countries. NATO troops were deployed to Afghanistan and continue to operate in the ongoing war there. The most recent NATO deployment was the 2011 enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libya, in an effort to aid the rebel forces in ousting Moammar Gadhafi.
The NATO summit was originally part of a week of international events, with Chicago also hosting the Group of Eight (G8) summit earlier in the same week, a forum for politicians from eight of the worlds biggest economies. The G8 consists of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Russia. The administration moved the G8 to the highly secure Camp David in an attempt to deter protestors from the Occupy movement and other organizations. The NATO and G8 summits have historically attracted thousands of protestors for a range of sociopolitical and economic issues. Despite the move of the G8 to outside of DC, it is estimated that tens of thousands of protestors will show up in Chicago. Travellers to the Windy City, during those dates, must take that into account and plan accordingly, whether booking hotel rooms or apartments in Chicago.
