Lok Kawi Wildlife Park An Exhibition Ground Of Exotic Flora And Fauna
Share: Kota Kinabalu is the capital city of Borneo Islands Sabah Division
. It is a thriving Malaysian industrial hub facing the South China Sea on one side against the majestic backdrop of Mount Kinabalu; a city with immense natural beauty. The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is a popular tourist destination which exemplifies the citys emphasis on natural conservation.
Although the locals view it as a zoo, the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is actually a miniature wildlife rehabilitation centre developed jointly by the Forestry Department and the Sabah Wildlife Department. Situated along the old Penampang to Papar road, 20 minutes away from the Kota Kinabalu city centre, the park is home to over 100 species of flora and fauna over a land area of 280 acres.
The aim of the park is to educate the public about endangered species while allowing them a chance to observe a range of exotic and rarely-seen animals up close with minimal restriction of the animals freedom of movement. The park is designed to be ideal for family day outings and contains a delightful childrens zoo and amphitheatre.
There are many highlights among the parks fauna. Orangutans, one of Borneos most popular species, and the bulbous-nosed Proboscis Monkeys can be seen at play within the zoos glass enclosed primate zone. The Borneo Pygmy elephants also have their own spacious pen where they can be observed undisturbed as does the Sumatran rhinoceros, one of the most endangered species in the world. Visitors can also observe the Malayan tigers, clouded leopards and sun bears from the safety of a raised observation deck.
The Lok Kawi aviary is one of the Parks centerpiece attractions; a large unspoiled area of jungle mimicking the birds natural habitat enclosed within a giant dome of netting. This scenic area, where an actual river runs through, is home to a range of indigenous and exotic avian species. Flightless birds such as southern hemisphere ostriches and emus have their own pens.
The park also includes a botanical trail in the form of a jungle trek best traversed via jeep, but can also be walked for 1.4km along a paved trail. Guides can be hired to enrich your experience by having the animals and rare plants explained to you at length.
