Hip Surgery - A Treatment That Gives Hope To Patients

Hip joint is one of the most mobile parts of our physique

. It handles the body weight and also helps us to move about very easily. This would be sufficient to understand how important the health of the hip is to our healthy everyday living. Dislocated, disjoined, diseased or damaged hip can cause intolerable pain and if left uncared for, can make a person completely immobile, bedridden and broken. Hip related problems are becoming very common these days due to a number of aspects. Age, of course, is the biggest factor, but a plethora of other factors, like arthritis, bone cancer etc, harms from accidents, cracking etc also can necessitate early replacement of hip joint.

The mechanism of hip joint is simple. A ball-shaped formation located at the highest end of the femur is placed inside a cup-shaped formation at the surface of the pelvis bone produce a hip joint. The ball is set loosely inside the cup but the restrictive edges on the pelvis ensure that the ball stays inside the cup at all times, regardless of how intense the movement of the ball is. But once harmed or diseased, the normal smooth movement of the ball and the cup is hampered and the patient suffers from great pain at even the mildest of motions.

Minor healing measures like drugs and mild physiotherapy are advised for people with low level of hip damage, but if the problem is severe, hip surgery is the only lasting solution. In the United States, hip surgical procedure has become really common these days and ranks second only to knee replacement in terms of volumes.

It is only after considering various factors like general health condition and age of the patients that the physicians recommend hip surgery. Hip replacement is the process where the destroyed cup and ball are removed and a prosthesis composed of a stem and an artificial ball is fixed on the femoral head and a cup, normally made of high endurance plastic is placed on the pelvis surface. Usually, surgeries are very effective in healing the problem, but in only less than five percent cases, difficulties like post-surgery infections, quick dislocation and continuous pain are observed.

But, it has been generally found that patients can lead a normal life after the hip surgical treatment. But the replaced hip, being artificial, needs to be supplanted through hip revising after ten years of so. Even with that, there is no doubt that hip replacement surgeries are the ultimate in the cure of damaged hip joints.
